Airblock

This drone is making a splash—literally.

The new Airblock educational drone can soar through the air, then transform into a hovercraft and glide over water or solid ground. Developed by San Francisco-based DIY robotics company Makeblock, Airblock launched on Kickstarter Wednesday and has already surpassed its $100,000 funding goal.

As of this writing, it had already racked up $192,783 in pledges from more than 1,200 backers, and there are still 54 days to go in the campaign. It’s slated to begin shipping to backers in Feb. 2017.

Designed to “encourage the spirit of creating,” the $99 Airblock “transforms like magic” from a drone to a hovercraft, to something else entirely that you design. Its magnetic, modular parts are easy to assemble and disassemble without any tools. They’re made of engineered plastic foam, so it’s crash-friendly and safe to fly indoors or out.

Once you put it together, you can control your creation via Bluetooth from the Makeblock app for iOS or Android. It’s not only fun but also educational, teaching kids about coding and aerodynamics. You can, for instance, drag and drop pre-programmed maneuvers within the app to make the drone spring to action, and combine different commands to create your own aerial stunts.

“We’re passionate about robotics and STEM, our dream is to let everyone experience that sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something out of nothing,” the Kickstarter page reads. “We want them to be amazed and think ‘wow, I made that?'”
